His children’s book Saluting Grandpa was inspired by his stories on Honor Flight.
“My writing for children gives me another creative outlet outside of news,” Gary says. “My books are my way of giving back through the funds we raise, to the issues we highlight. I love to be part of something that can inspire the next generation to use their talents to make a difference.” He has presented at more than 300 area schools.
Gary’s latest children’s book highlights the struggles active service members face as they leave their families to serve. Until Daddy Comes Home was released in early 2014.
While juggling his career, his family (wife, two sons, and two yellow dogs) and his work with charitable organizations—Gary was proud to earn an MFA from Hamline University in January of 2014.
