What To Do When The Power Goes Out

So the power went out, what do you do with the food in the fridge?  The American Red Cross has some advice:

First, try to avoid opening your refrigerator or freezer. An unopened refrigerator can keep foods cold enough for a couple of hours, at least.

A freezer that's half full should hold for 24 hours without power.  Food in a full freezer can last up to two days.

If you know you're going to be without power more than a couple of hours, pack perishables and food you're going to need in a cooler with ice….or put it outside if the temperature is below 40 degrees.

And don't use your stove or oven to heat your home — that's a fire risk.
