Some area children are enjoying an early Christmas present. Santa stopped by at the Friendly House in Davenport to help distribute newly refurbished bicycles and helmets. It’s part of a program through the Scott County Jail where inmates restore used bicycles that have been donated. Organizers say that way it means much more than a simply new bike for these kids.
“That’s what we believe people need to have a second chance. It’s about taking something maybe somebody doesn’t want and put a little time and effort into it, TLC, and make something out of it,” said Lorelei Pfautz, Executive Director of Friendly House.
“I would say thank you. And thank you for the help for people to have bikes,” said Justin Flores who received a bike.
Since 2005, the jail inmate program has distributed close to 600 refurbished bikes altogether to those in need.
