It Takes A Village

Fran Riley Feature 12/18/14

It takes a village to build a village.

Monsignor Drake Shafer and his legion of volunteers take pride in organizing the snow villages at Saint Ann Catholic Church in Long Grove.

For the sixth year, the Department 56 Villages are a conversation piece at the church.

Monsignor Shafer started collecting the villages in 1976.

His collection has grown substantially over the last 38 years.

The seven communities in the parish are depicted in the display.

New this year is a Ferris Wheel, a Christmas Sock Hop display, and a Boy Scout Camp.

There are more than 200 buildings.

Beautiful snow covered neighborhoods, churches, and artistic backdrops give visitors a sense of what it was like living in the Midwest in the 1950’s.

Lancer Stadium, Lost Grove Lake, Scott County Park, and other local attractions are included in this Winter Wonderland!

Monsignor indicates every time people look at the display, they see something they had not seen before.

A gorgeous set of villages!

A down home feeling!

Christmas at Saint Ann Church!
