Davenport Police believe medical condition caused fatal crash

DAVENPORT, Iowa, (KWQC) — Police say a medical condition is believed to be the reason for a fatal crash on Northwest Boulevard. The accident happened on Thursday, February 19, 2015 at 12:12 p.m. at the intersection of Northwest Boulevard and 46th Street.

When first responders arrived they found one of the drivers, 48-year-old Bernard Hanten of Davenport, unresponsive. Crews administered lifesaving measures at the scene and then took him to Genesis East Hospital where he was later pronounced dead.

Police say Hanten was northbound on Northwest Blvd, approaching the intersection at W 46th Street when he struck the other vehicle. The incident remains under investigation by the Davenport Police Crash Investigation Unit.

The other driver in the crash was taken to the hospital for non-life threatening injuries. Both vehicles were able to be driven away from the scene, sustaining only minor damage.

Based on their preliminary investigation, police believe the accident was a result of a medical condition. An autopsy has been scheduled by the Scott County Medical Examiner’s Office.
