COAL VALLEY, Ill. (KWQC) – More than 300 animals from all around the world are housed at Niabi Zoo. Tomorrow, people will be able to visit the zoo for the 2015 season.
Marc Heinzman, Zoo Director, says there is something for everyone out there. Heinzman says, “Kids absolutely love the zoo. They’re always fascinated by animals.”
From the smallest fox breed in the world to lions and giraffes, those who have the slightest curiosity for wildlife can find something to enjoy.
Niabi Zoo is getting ready to show off some new exhibits this season, like a cave to watch meerkat’s explore, and a new deck pavilion that oversees the koi pond.
There is also the newest member of the zoo family, a baby giraffe. Saturday, Niabi Zoo announced the name of the baby as “Genesis T. Giraffe”. He was named after his sponsor, Genesis Health System. Genesis T. is expected to grow up to 18 feet and 2600 pounds.
With doors opening on Monday, Niabi Zoo is offering free admission for the first five days. Heinzman says, “We like to offer free admission as a thank you to the community for their support over the years.”
This Quad City landmark of more than fifty years is counting down the hours to another opening day. Heinzman says, “We’re really excited to have everyone back at the zoo after a long winter.”
