Iowa first to test driver’s license phone app

DAVENPORT, Iowa. (KWQC) –  Need to show your driver’s license? There could soon be an app for that and Iowa is the first state to try it out. About 100 Iowa Department of Transportation employees are part of a pilot program – testing a new mobile driver’s license app.

They’ll be using it in different settings where people who normally have to show identification. A company called MorphotTrust USA is providing the software for the app. Company representatives say the pilot phase is to see if any features should be added and to ensure that information is safe. Some drivers think it will be more convenient, while others would rather stick to the old fashioned way.

“I think it’s an awesome idea. I think it’s a lot easier because most people half the time forget their wallet and purses at home and they always have their phone with them,” said Michelle Clark.

“I wouldn’t trust it with all the hacking going on, I’d just rather have it in my own wallet. That’s just my personal opinion and I’m not budging,” said Poncho Johnson.

IDOT officials say the mobile driver’s license app would be the same cost as the card -and you could chose to have both. If the pilot program goes well the goal is to have it available for the public 12 to 18 months after that.
