BETTENDORF, Iowa (KWQC) – On Wednesday, February 17, starting at 1:00 p.m., at the Bettendorf Public Library, there will be a discussion of the Scott County Reads Together title “Playing with the Enemy: A Baseball Prodigy, World War II, and the Long Journey Home” by Gary W. Moore led by St. Ambrose University English Professor Michael Hustedde.
This memoir portrays the life of the author’s father, whose budding baseball career with the Brooklyn Dodgers never recovered after his stint as a sailor in WWII, during which he taught top-secret German prisoners-of-war how to play baseball.
Moore himself will do multiple presentations in Scott County during National Library Week in April.
Starting at 7:00 p.m. a discussion of “Tender at the Bone” by Ruth Reichl will be led by librarian Hedy Hustedde.
At an early age, Reichl discovered that “food could be a way of making sense of the world….If you watched people as they ate, you could find out who they were.”
Her deliciously crafted memoir is the story of a life determined, enhanced, and defined in equal measure by a passion for food, unforgettable people, and the love of tales well told.
Books are available for loan on a first-come basis at the Bettendorf Public Library Information Desk. New members are always welcome.
