BETTENDORF, Iowa (KWQC) — Throughout the warmer months, boaters from all over the world head to Minnesota to start their journey down the length of the Mississippi River. Many make a stop in the Quad Cities as they pass through.
On Saturday, September 3, 2016, for the second year in a row, canoeists and kayakers with the Warrior Expeditions Organizations are scheduled to arrive in Bettendorf and will be met by local veterans.
VFW Post 9128 plans to meet and greet the boaters at Leech Park around 1 p.m. This year the paddlers include four veterans, all who served in Iraq or Afghanistan, plus two service dogs.
The Post members will provide transportation for their equipment (canoes, kayaks, and other items) for storage and the paddlers during their stay overnight.
A welcoming Potluck dinner is planned for 5 p.m. on Saturday night with the Post members and Warrior Paddlers.
Free Saturday night lodging and Sunday morning breakfast buffets have been coordinated between the VFW Post and the newly renovated the Isle of Capri.
Later on Sunday morning, the Post and Paddlers will coordinate a drop area for their equipment to continue their long trip along the Mississippi.
