QUAD CITIES (KWQC) – Flu mist is no longer an option at Quad City area hospitals. The Centers for Disease Control and a pediatrician group recently announced they would no longer recommend the nasal vaccine for prevention of influenza. Flu mist became a popular alternative to flu shots when it hit the market a few years ago, but now, doctors have concluded its not as effective as a flu shot. Officials at UnityPoint Health-Trinity say although it was a good option in the past, they are also not recommending it for this year.
“Flu mist was a good option for parents who didn’t want their kids to suffer through the trauma of a shot, so there is that factor,” says Dr. Vikram Agrawal with UnityPoint Health Trinity Clinic.
Trinity says the shot is the best way to protect yourself from the flu this season. Genesis health says it will not be administering the flu mist, either.
It’s not too early to get your child vaccinated. Doctors are encouraged to begin offering flu shots no later than October.
Rock Island County began its flu shot clinics on Sept. 13, 2016. Click here for the schedule of future times and locations.
