QUAD CITIES (KWQC) — Motorists looking to cross the Mississippi River were held up for a little while as one of the biggest cruise ships on the river squeezed under the I-280 bridge. The operation happened on Wednesday night, September 21, 2016, after 10 p.m.

The Illinois State Police tells us the watch captain of the American Queen riverboat called and asked that traffic be shut down as they went under the bridge.

Trooper Jason Wilson says the last time this boat went under the bridge in high water it was a tight squeeze. They knew they had around seven-plus inches of clearance, but when a heavy truck would cross over the bridge, it caused the bridge deck to flex and dip onto the boat. This flexing caused the boat to scrape the bottom of the bridge deck.

In order to prevent that, Wilson tells us that Illinois and Iowa police shut down traffic for around 10 minutes to allow the boat to safely cross under the bridge.

No issues were reported during this crossing.
