MT. CARROLL, Ill. (KWQC) – Some middle school students were inadvertently exposed to tear gas on Thursday during a field trip in Thomson.
The West Carroll Middle School students were visiting a farm near Thomson Prison when they were exposed.
“The prison didn’t know anybody was over there,” said Police Chief Fred Cass with the Mt. Carroll Police Department. “They were doing a demonstration or training or something and the wind shifted and some kids on the field trip got exposed to tear gas.”
According to Cass, the students with the worst symptoms experienced watery eyes, itchy throats, and runny noses. They were taken to the hospital to be evaluated.
Eventually, it was decided that all 26-30 students and staff members on the trip would be evaluated by paramedics out of an abundance of caution.
No one was seriously injured.
