Audit reveals mishandling of money by former jail manager

DES MOINES, Iowa (AP) – State auditors have found a former jail administrator in the Cedar County Sheriff’s Office did not properly deposit money from inmate room and board and work release fees for 2 ½ years resulting in an estimated loss to the county of more than $35,000.

State Auditor Mary Mosiman released the results of a special audit on Tuesday.

It says Daron Wilkinson worked as the jail administrator from May 2013 until his resignation in December 2015. The auditors do not conclude what happened to the money and no charges have been filed.

Sheriff Warren Wethington did not immediately return a call.

Iowa Division of Criminal Investigation Agent Rick Rahn confirms the audit report is part of an investigation but declined further comment.

A telephone number for Wilkinson could not be located.
