Two people, two officers rescued from mine shaft in Dubuque


DUBUQUE, Iowa (KWQC) An unusual rescue in Dubuque over the weekend after two people got stuck in an old mine shaft. Police responded around 1:30 a.m. to North Grandview Ave. near Bunker Hill Golf Course.

Officers on the scene entered a storm drain to access the mine shaft, where they found two people. They were identified as 28-year-old Dallas Julian Blake, of St. Paul, MN and 23-year-old Madeleine Rae Fiksdal of Rochester. Fiksdal sustained multiple injuries from a fall.

Dubuque Fire Department personnel arrived at the scene and were able to extract Fiksdal and Blake, as well as two officers who also could not get out of the tunnel.
Fisksdal was taken to a local hospital. Blake was arrested on a charge of trespassing.

The officers were not injured.
