Dubuque Police say scammers threaten to shut off business’ electricity

DUBUQUE, Iowa (KWQC) — Police are warning citizens about a scam that has targeted businesses in the area. Lt. Scott Baxter says the department recently took a call from a local business reporting a scam where the caller claimed to be with Alliant Energy. He says the caller threatened to shut off the business’ electricity if an outstanding bill wasn’t paid.

Baxter says the conversation didn’t progress to the point of a payment method being discussed, but he says that’s likely where the call was headed. He says the scammer hung up when the business started to question the caller’s legitimacy.

Baxter says this scam was circulating in the area a couple years ago and at least one business was victimized. He says this is the only report they’ve received lately.
