ROCK ISLAND, Ill. (KWQC) – They are a darling duo. Occasional visitors to the New Friendship Memory Care Unit in Rock Island. Maxx and Patches are trained therapy dogs.
Patches is a Maltese. Maxx is a Miniature Schnauzer. Recently, the two four legged friends made a grand entrance at Friendship Manor.
Glo Keeslar owns Patches. Glo says the dog needed a home and she needed a dog. Peggy Powell is Maxx’s owner. Peggy has been doing this volunteer work for about five years.
The dogs provide companionship and put smiles on the faces of residents who are coping with memory loss. The residents hold the animals, give them doggie treats, and look forward to visits from the animals.
The bond between residents and therapy dogs is special. The residents reach out and the dogs respond. Peggy is thrilled that the residents enjoy these special visits. She says it warms her heart!
