UPDATE: A resident in the group home identified as a suspect has now been arrested on charges of arson.
UPDATE: The Burlington Fire Marshal and Burlington Police detectives investigated the fire and discovered the fire had been intentionally set. Officers identified a suspect.
The house provided homes for developmentally disabled clients. Officers say in this case, one of those clients was responsible for starting the fire in an upstairs bedroom.
The client, who has developmental disabilities, has been placed into a secured environment for evaluation and treatment.
BURLINGTON, Iowa (KWQC)- Around 11 a.m. Sunday, October 23, Burlington Firefighters responded to a house fire in the 1000 block of N. 9th Street in Burlington.
When firefighters got there, they discovered smoke and flames coming from a bedroom window on the second floor.
Everyone evacuated the home safely.
The house was being used as a group home for Self Reliance Inc. Three residents were inside along with one employee.
No working smoke detectors were discovered.
The Cause of the fire is under investigation but Burlington Fire Officials are considering it suspicious.
