Crews battle early morning house fire in Galesburg

House Fire

GALESBURG, Ill. (KWQC) – At around 12:55 am, Galesburg Fire Department was called out to a structure fire on Friday.

Central Station units arrived at 220 North West Street to find heavy smoke in the neighborhood between Academy and West Streets. All occupants had exited the building by the time crews arrived.

Smoke was pouring from the eaves of the 1 1/2 story structure and flames were showing at the back of the house on the first and second floors. The visible flames were put out in about 15 minutes, but flames in the wall cavities and attic took over an hour to extinguish fully.

The back of the structure has extensive damage on both floors. Officials say it appears that the fire started in the first floor kitchen. The cause of the fire is still under investigation.
