BURLINGTON, Iowa (AP) — The Burlington mayor has apologized for comments that offended some city employees.

The Hawk Eye newspaper reports Mayor Shane McCampbell apologized at Monday’s City Council meeting for comments he made last month during a discussion of a 7.2 percent raise given to City Manager Jim Ferneau. Some noted the raise far exceeded the 2.5 percent increase given to other city employees, but McCampbell replied that Ferneau was involved in the city’s most important decisions.

Contrasting that with other city workers, McCampbell said, “They take a week off and maybe a few blades of grass don’t get cut.”

Burlington’s firefighter union objected, arguing firefighters, police and others do more than cut grass.

On Monday, McCampbell apologized, saying his “actions will show you I’m for the little guy.”
