DAVENPORT, Iowa (KWQC) – Confused residents of the Quad Cities who do not follow baseball were jolted awake just before midnight last night.
The Chicago Cubs won the World Series after an emotionally-draining victory in a rain-delayed Game 7 that went into extra innings.
When the game finally ended at around 11:50 p.m., Cubs fans across the QC celebrated by going outside and setting off pyrotechnics.
“There were more people setting off fireworks last night than the Fourth of July,” says Jeff Whitten of Rock Island, Illinois. “It seemed like everybody was lighting off something.”
Whitten, a Cubs fan, knew what was happening, but some did not.
Davenport Police received nine reports of gunshots being fired that upon investigation turned out only to be fireworks.
“The time frame of most of the calls would be consistent with the end of the game,” says Capt. Brent Biggs with the Davenport Police Department.
Startled residents were able to regain peace of mind even if they could not regain the lost sleep.
