UPDATE: 2 police sergeants shot, wounded in gun battle with suspect

4:36 PM – NEW YORK (AP) – Authorities say a New York City police sergeant has been fatally shot and another has been wounded in an exchange of gunfire with a suspect in the Bronx.

Democratic Gov. Andrew Cuomo (KWOH’-moh) announced the sergeant’s death Friday. He says the other officer was shot in the leg and is undergoing treatment.

Authorities say the gunman was killed. They say he had fired on officers who had stopped his car near a ballfield following a brief pursuit.

A law enforcement official identifies the suspect as 35-year-old Manuel Rosales. The official says a woman called 911 after Rosales broke into her home, violating an order of protection.

The official wasn’t authorized to discuss an ongoing case and spoke on the condition of anonymity.

A lawyer who previously represented Rosales says his client wasn’t violent.

3:54 PM – NEW YORK (AP) – Authorities say two New York City police sergeants have been shot and wounded in a gunbattle with a robbery suspect.

The New York Police Department’s top spokesman says the robbery suspect was killed in the exchange of gunfire Friday in the Bronx. Spokesman Stephen Davis says both sergeants have been hospitalized and one of them is seriously injured.

The condition of the other sergeant is unknown.

Davis says the suspect’s car was pulled over near a ballfield by police who had received a description of someone who had just committed a home invasion. He says the suspect fired on the sergeants who were responding.

News helicopter footage of the scene shows a red SUV mounted on a sidewalk pinned between a flatbed truck and a police vehicle.
