BETTENDORF, Iowa (KWQC) – I-74 Westbound commuters could find themselves with a longer drive time for the next couple of weeks.
The State Street exit, or Exit 4, is closed to drivers. Resident Engineer for the Iowa Department of Transportation, Mark Brandl, says this is to replace sanitary and storm sewer.
“We are definitely under the crunch to get everything cleaned up,” said Brandl. This is one of the last critical areas we have to concentrate on this year. The remainder of the work, that will happen next year, won’t be near as critical.”
The exit was closed around 5 a.m. on Monday, November 7, 2016 and drivers are now expected to take a detour.
The detour recommended by IDOT takes drivers to the Middle Road exit and then back down I-74 on the Eastbound side toward State St.
Another option for drivers, taking Kimberly Road toward the riverfront.
Brandl says they are hoping to get the exit back open before Thanksgiving, but it really depends on what they find.
“We’ve had alot of surprises when we get into these areas that kind of delays some of the construction,”said Brandl. “But yeah the intent is to get it done before Thanksgiving. With any luck, maybe we will be there a week, but it will take at least a week.”
IDOT was concerned about confusion and back-ups, but tried to plan accordingly.
“We have a little concern about confusion, so we have put out message boards, digital message boards, to display this.” said Brandl.
TV6 will watch for back-ups on I-74 and update viewers on-air and online.
