DES MOINES, Iowa (AP) – Republican Rod Blum has won a second term representing Iowa’s 1st Congressional District, beating Democrat Monica Vernon.

Blum won Tuesday’s election in the northeast Iowa district, made up of 20 counties, despite a significant Democratic voter registration edge over Republicans. Non-affiliated voters outnumber those registered to either party in the district.

Blum, a businessman from Dubuque, has taken conservative stands, including calling for repeal of the affordable care act and supporting tax cuts. He has been especially critical of House leadership and supported the removal of former Speaker John Boehner.

Vernon is a businesswoman and former member of the Cedar Rapids City Council.
