DAVENPORT, Iowa (KWQC)- The Davenport American Legion Post 26 and the City of Davenport are recognizing current members of our military and veterans at the annual Veterans Day Parade on Friday, November 11, 10 a.m.
Davenport Alderman and Commander of American Legion Post 26, Mike Matson, says the more people along the parade route the better.
“It’s really neat for all the folks to see the people standing and just saying thanks, because we are going to have we think the only Pearl Harbor survivor riding in the disabled veterans vehicle, we are certainly going to have 90-year-old World War II folks, and Korean, and Vietnam folks,” said Commander Matson. “So they love when they see the community come out and just say thanks for their service.”
This year’s Grand Marshals are Rock Island Arsenal Garrison Commander Colonel Tauke, Command Sergeant Major Callwood and Mayor Frank Klipsch. A Veterans Day ceremony will take place in front of the Scott County Courthouse; 400 West Fourth Street immediately after the parade.
The public is invited to a chili luncheon at 12 p.m. at the American Legion Post 26; 702 West 35th Street andan open house at VFW Post 828; 101 S. Linwood Avenue from 12 p.m to 3 p.m.
Traffic restrictions will be in place throughout the morning.
The parade begins at Fourth Street and Western Avenue and heads south on Western to Third Street then east on Third Street to Main Street. From there the parade heads south on Main Street to Second Street, west on Second Street then north on Ripley Street to Fourth Street. The parade will disband at Fourth Street and Ripley Street.
Both sides of Western Avenue from the Fifth Street railroad tracks to Third Street will be closed to traffic starting at 8 a.m on Friday, November 11th to allow for parade staging. Temporary no parking will be enforced along Western Avenue starting Friday, November 11th 12:01 a.m to 12:00 p.m.
Traffic during the parade will be held and controlled by Davenport Police Department as the parade passes along the route. Citizens wishing to view the parade should park along the parade route or in one of the downtown parking ramps before 10 a.m. Vehicles parked on the parade route are not permitted to leave their parking spaces until the parade passes.
