UPDATE: As of just before 8 a.m. parade officials say four logo balloons will be featured in the parade. It’s been deemed too windy and unsafe for the larger character balloons. They expect the balloon handlers will still march in the parade, along with the rest of parade lineup.
UPDATE: As of 7:15 Saturday morning organizers say the parade is still set to happen. They are making last minute decisions on which balloons they’ll be able to inflate and send down the route.
UPDATE: Parade organizers tell us, based on current projected winds, the likelihood of the large balloons flying in the Festival of Trees parade is diminishing. Officials from Starbound Entertainment, the company that owns the balloons, will re-assess the situation and make the official call whether the large balloons will fly at 6 a.m. Saturday.
Organizers also say they will not be inflating balloons Friday night like in years past.
DAVENPORT, Iowa (KWQC) — With the change in weather heading toward the Quad Cities, the question on many people’s mind is; will the Festival of Trees Parade go on as planned? In 2015, the parade route received several inches of snow the night before and forced organizers to cancel the annual event. This year, snow is not the problem, but wind and cold temperatures will be.
As of Friday at noon, organizers say the parade is still on. But, due to the weather, the large character balloons are in question. The final decision will be made on Saturday morning by the balloons’ caretakers.
In addition to the balloons being in jeopardy, the live music is another element that doesn’t like the forecast. Two marching bands, Davenport Central and Moline, have cancelled because of the cold. Two other marching bands have not yet made an announcement.
So what will be in the parade? Plenty! Organizers say the small logo balloons are still a go, along with the vehicles, floats and of course the big man himself, Santa Clause!
Of course we want you to come out to downtown Davenport and join us Saturday morning, but if you don’t want to brave the cold, KWQC will broadcast the parade live on TV6 and on kwqc.com startingt at 10 a.m.
