Barges break loose near Memphis, closing 21 mile stretch of Mississippi River

MEMPHIS, Tenn. (KWQC) — Part of the Mississippi River near Memphis had to be closed over the weekend after dozens of barges broke loose. A boat was towing 42 barges with corn and soybeans when they broke free. T he Coast Guard blocked off a 21 mile stretch of the river while they got everything under control.

Officials say 26 barges ran aground. There’s no word yet on what caused the accident.
