WAPELLO, Iowa (KWQC) – This is the last week for families in the Quad Cities area to sign up for Toys for Tots. Registration runs Thursday through Saturday from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. at the Toys for Tots warehouse at 8301 42nd Street West in Rock Island.
This will be the second Christmas Nina Solomon has registered her eight grand kids for the program.
“Ranging from the age of 15 down to the age of four,” she said.
Solomon says their parents are unable to take care of them, so she is their primary caretaker.
“They’re just not up to the par of being a parent yet, they haven’t grown up,” she said.
She says there was no question that she would take over that responsibility.
“Keeping the children together and keeping them with family, that’s most important to me, family’s important,” Solomon said.
She and her husband keep busy with a house full of kids.
“We’re constantly on the go, we’re constantly doing things, never a dull moment,” Solomon said.
She says it’s not always easy, though, especially during the holidays, which is why she reached out to Toys for Tots last year.
“It would be a whole lot harder without some help,” Solomon said. “Toys for Tots, like I said, it’s just been God sent.”
With that help from Toys for Tots, she says Christmas is a whole lot merrier for the entire family.
“It’s the point of they have something new, and that something new means more to them than any thing in the world,” Solomon said. “Toys for Tots will put a smile on a child’s face and I think it’s a great program.”
Solomon says she’s now reaching out to other families who may need a little holiday help, and encouraging them to register for the program, as well.
