Birds found dead on Lake Havasu test negative for avian flu

LAKE HAVASU CITY, Ariz. (AP) — Wildlife officials say the birds found dead in April on Lake Havasu have tested negative for avian flu and west Nile virus.

Today’s News-Herald reports ( Havasu wildlife manager Suzanne Ehret discovered the bodies of 30 eared grebes — duck-like aquatic birds — in late April. She sent them to be tested to determine whether environmental factors contributed to their deaths.

Arizona Game and Fish wildlife biologist Carrington Knox says tests at the National Wildlife Health Center in Wisconsin were negative for environmental diseases.

Knox said the grebes died from blunt force trauma.
