CHICAGO (AP) — Chicago Alderman JoAnn Thompson has died after suffering a sudden heart failure.
Thompson’s chief of staff, Debbie Blair, announced the alderman’s death on Tuesday, saying Thompson died Monday surrounded by family and friends.
Thompson represented Chicago’s 16th Ward in the Chicago City Council. The ward is on the city’s south and west sides and includes the Englewood neighborhood.
Chicago Mayor Rahm Emanuel says the Englewood community has lost a “tireless advocate” with Thompson’s death and the city has lost one of its “dearest friends.” Emanuel says Thompson made it her mission to “bring jobs, economic empowerment and educational opportunities” to the neighborhood. He says she had a “caring spirit and constant smile.”
