BAUCHI, Nigeria (AP) — Witnesses and police say a crowd at a northeastern Nigerian market beat to death a teenage girl suspected of planning a suicide attack, then set her body ablaze.
Police said a second suspect, also a teenage girl, has been arrested at the biggest market in Bauchi city on Sunday.
Vendor Mohd Adamu said the two girls refused to be searched at the gate to the vegetable market, arousing suspicion from people who attacked them.
Police Deputy Superintendent Mohammad Haruna said it seemed doubtful the girl was a bomber and described her as the victim of “mob action carried out by an irate crowd.”
Recently girls as young as 10 have been used to carry explosives that have gone off in busy markets and bus stations. The attacks have raised fears that Boko Haram (BOH’-koh hah-RAHM’) may be using some of its hundreds of kidnap victims as suicide bombers.
