Brouwer scored from the left circle after a marginal hooking call on Jonathan Toews. Eric Fehr and Alex Ovechkin also scored for the Capitals.
CHICAGO (AP) — Derrick Rose scored 13 of his 17 points in the fourth quarter as the Chicago Bulls beat the Denver Nuggets 106-101 last night. Jimmy Butler scored 26 for Chicago. The late surge by Rose lifted the Bulls to their 11th win in 13 games. Wilson Chandler led Denver with 22 points.
CHARLESTON, Ill. (AP) — Chris Olivier scored a career-high 22 points to help Eastern Illinois rally to beat Tennessee Tech 61-59 in the Ohio Valley opener for both teams yesterday. Reggie Smith hit a 3 with 2:13 left to give Eastern Illinois a 55-52 lead. Smith and LeTrell Viser scored 11 apiece for the Panthers.
WASHINGTON (AP) — Chicago Blackhawks coach Joel Quenneville says left wing Kris Versteeg “could be out for a bit” with an injury sustained in the Winter Classic. Versteeg was hurt when he blocked Eric Fehr’s shot with his left hand early in the third period of yesterday’s 3-2 loss to the Washington Capitals. Versteeg has nine goals and 18 assists this season.
