Rio de Janeiro governor diagnosed with cancer

RIO DE JANEIRO (AP) — The governor of the Brazilian state that will host the Olympics has been diagnosed with non-Hodgkin’s lymphoma, a cancer affecting the lymph nodes.

Oncologist Daniel Tabak says Luiz Fernando Pezao’s prognosis is good because the cancer hasn’t spread to vital organs. The 60-year-old Pezao is to begin chemotherapy treatments next week.

He vowed to fight the illness, saying he was sure to “come out of it stronger.”

The diagnosis comes five months before the Olympic Games start.

Thursday’s announcement also came after the leak of spreadsheets seized as evidence in a corruption probe. They list Pezao and more than 200 other politicians. The politicians’ codenames, as well as monetary values, were also listed. It’s not immediately clear whether the spreadsheets tracked illicit payouts or legal campaign donations.
