Washington, DC police identify man fatally shot by officer

WASHINGTON (AP) — District of Columbia police have identified the man shot and killed by an officer after he confronted the officer with a large knife and another sharp object.

In a news release on Friday, police identified the man as 34-year-old Darick Napper of Washington.

The shooting occurred Thursday afternoon in northeast Washington.

Police spokeswoman Aquita Brown says the officer was called to investigate a report of a man armed with a knife. Police said in a statement that the man was carrying “a large, hunting-style knife along with a second edged weapon” and that the man confronted the officer. Police say the officer fired once in self-defense. The man was taken to a hospital, where he died.

The shooting is under investigation.
